The Burden of the Beast

Learn to Live Everyday, Like it was your Last and you will never live in Regret!   Harry

Cody Ellingson roamed this earth for 33 years. Our Rhode Island crew was lucky enough to cross paths with him and his friends from Yankton, South Dakota while we were pretending to go to school at UH Manoa around the year 2000…and we always did our best to keep in touch. During Cody’s fight with cancer in 2014, it was plain to see how many people he’d impacted along the way. From Alaska to Hawaii to South Dakota to Rhode Island…and many places in between…his spirit united everyone to help him fight cancer. Unfortunately, the burden of the beast that is cancer is sometimes too strong to overcome.

It still doesn’t make sense that he is gone, but the many memories that make up his adventurous legacy — filled with smiles and positivity — are a constant reminder that we have one life…and like Cody, we should make the most of it. This ramshackle video was filmed one year ago – July 19, 2014 – at his memorial gathering in Yankton, SD. It was a unique and unforgettable celebration of life that brought many people together from all over to share stories, videos, and a shot (or two) of Cody’s homemade kahlua. Throughout the weekend, our friends Todd and Jenny and the Ellingson Family showed us all what courage looks like as they smiled through the tears, and created an incredible tribute to Cody’s memory (complete with a shave ice truck!). During the ceremony, Rosco used his undeniable talents to put into music what couldn’t be expressed in words…and it provided us all with the perfect perspective for an unexplainable loss.

“And tonight we’ll raise our glasses to the end…because when it comes, you know we got a friend.”

Cody’s memorial weekend was a beautiful peek beyond the void…where, together, gathered on a family farm, or an outdoor amphitheater, or around campfires or even surrounding a mechanical bull…we could all find comfort in each other…

Every time I hear this song. I wish it would last forever.

Cruze on Cody!
